The Public Enemy showcases James Cagney’s powerful 1931 breakthrough performance as streetwise tough guy Tom Powers. When shooting began, Cagney had a secondary role but Zanuck soon spotted Cagney’s screen dominance and gave him the star part. From that moment, an indelible genre classic and an enduring star career were both born.

As a psychotic thug devoted to his hard-boiled ma, James Cagney – older, scarier and just as elctrifying – gives a performance to match his work in The Public Enemy as White Heat’s cold-blooded Cody Jarrett. Bracingly directed by Raoul Walsh, this fast-paced thriller tracing Jarrett’s violent life in and out of jail is also a harrowing character study. Jarrett is a psychological time bomb ruled by impulse. It is among the most vivid screen performances of Cagney’s career, and the excitement it generates will put you on top of the world!

In Angels with Dirty Faces, Cagney’s Rocky Sullivan is a charismatic ghetto tough whose underworld rise makes him a hero to a gang of slum punks. The 1938 New York Film Critics Best Actor Award came Cagney’s way, as well as one of the film’s three Oscar nominations. Watch the chilling death-row finale and you’ll know why.

“R-I-C-O, Little Caesar, that’s who!” Edward G. Robinson bellowed into the phone. And Hollywood got the message: 37-year-old Robinson, not gifted with matinee-idol looks, was nonetheless a first-class star and moviegoers hailed the hard-hitting social consciousness dramas that became the Depression-era mainstay of Warner Bros.

Little Caesar is the tale of pugnacious Caesar Enrico Bandello, a hoodlum with a Chicago-sized chip on his shoulder, few attachments, fewer friends and no sense of underworld diplomacy. And Robinson – a genteel art collector who disdained guns (in the movie, his eyelids were taped to keep them from blinking when he fired a pistol) – was forever associated with the screen’s archetypal gangster.

A rundown diner bakes in the Arizona heat. Inside, fugitive killer Duke Mantee sweats out a manhunt, holding disillusioned writer Alan Squier, young Gabby Maple and a handful of others hostage.

The Petrified Forest, Robert E. Sherwood’s 1935 Broadway success about survival of the fittest, hit the screen a year later with Leslie Howard and Humphrey Bogart magnificently recreating their stage roles and Bette Davis ably reteaming with her Of Human Bondage co-star Howard. Sherwood first wanted Bogart for a smaller role. “I thought Sherwood was right,” Bogart said. “I couldn’t picture myself playing a gangster. So what happened? I made a hit as the gangster.” So right was he that Howard refused to make the film without him…and helped launch Bogie’s brilliant movie career.

In The Roaring Twenties, the speakeasy era never roared louder than in this gangland chronicle that packs a wallop under action master Raoul Walsh’s direction. Against a backdrop of newsreel-like montages and narration, it follows the life of jobless war veteran Eddie Bartlett (James Cagney) who turns bootlegger, dealing in “bottles instead of battles.” Battles await Eddie within and without his growing empire. Outside are territorial feuds and gangland bloodlettings. Inside is the treachery of his double-dealing associate (Humphrey Bogart). It would be 10 years before Cagney played another gangster (in White Heat), a time in which gangster movies themselves became rare. “He used to be a big shot,” Panama Smith (Gladys George) says at the finale, marking Bartlett’s demise…and signaling the end of Hollywood’s focus on the gangster era.

Everything that was good about the 163-minute theatrical release of Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor in 1987 is even better in this new 218-minute director’s cut. By contrast, much that was peculiarly distant and lifeless the first time around isn’t really better or worse in this edition. Conclusion: the net gains are considerable if you invest time to appreciate Bertolucci’s full feeling for the odd story of Pu Yi, China’s final monarch. You remember the saga: taken from his mother at the age of three, Pu Yi is brought into the enclosed walls of the Forbidden City to replace the real emperor. There he becomes a pampered prisoner and hollow symbol of an older monarchy that has since given way to a ruthless, 20th century republic. With his pining loyalists beheaded or kept at bay by armed soldiers outside the City’s walls, Pu Yi is tutored by an English gentleman (Peter O’Toole) and wed to a kindred spirit (Joan Chen). Eventually cast from his gated paradise, Pu Yi (wonderfully portrayed in adulthood by John Lone) becomes, by turns, a playboy, a dupe to the Japanese, and a victim of China’s cultural reforms and re-education programs. This longer cut largely top-loads the film with greater reason to feel compassion for the emperor, with his often wordless sense-adventure in the mysteries that could only be known to one little boy plunged into indecipherable alien decorum, robbed of self-determination and common sense by his infinite privilege. Added scenes (including some in the political rehabilitation camp where Pu Yi is held for a decade) fill out not so much added facts as density of experience. This improved The Last Emperor is richer in soul and a pronounced sense of Bertolucci actually directing this film in the most personal and profound sense. –Tom Keogh

Get Fantasy Island – The Complete First Season Online Right Now!

One of the definitive TV shows of the 1970s originally aspired to the dark moral complexity of anthology shows like The Twilight Zone. Even diehard fans will have to admit Fantasy Island fell short of its goal–but that didn’t stop it from becoming hugely popular, lasting for seven powerhouse seasons. All the most iconic elements were present from the beginning: Diminutive Tattoo (Herve Villechaize, The Man with the Golden Gun) shouting “De plane! De plane!”; infinitely gracious Mr. Roarke (Ricardo Montalban, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan) commanding “Smiles, everyone, smiles,” before delivering pages of exposition with his implacable Latin gravitas; the white suits; the tropical island that somehow has all the vegetation and weather patterns in the world; the pageant of celebrities from Jim Backus to Karen Valentine, Barbi Benton to Don Knotts–it all added up to sneakily addictive television. After all, wish-fulfillment–be it a schlub who wants to be irresistible to chicks or kids who want their separated parents to reconcile or a former cheerleading team who want to relive their high school glory days–had a built-in narrative hook, even though the resolution (various versions of “be careful what you wish for”) was never in doubt. Almost every episode bubbled over with sex, revenge, ambition, and regret, delivered with a shameless lack of subtlety. Over the course of the first season, the interplay between Montalban and Villechaize–each armed with an intriguing exotic accent–became more and more prominent, with Mr. Roarke becoming increasingly supernatural while Tattoo oozed the mortal sins of greed and lechery. Turn on any episode; you’ll find it hard to stop watching, no matter how cheesy or ludicrous the storyline. This four-dvd set includes the original TV movie pilot, its sequl, and the 16 episode first season, as well as a couple of largely bland featurettes enlivened by the occasional barbed comment from executive producer Leonard Goldberg. –Bret Fetzer

Review of Gilbert & Sullivan - The Mikado / Conrad, Stewart, Revill, Opera World Online

Get Gilbert & Sullivan – The Mikado / Conrad, Stewart, Revill, Opera World Online Right Now!

An uneasy cross between a movie and a theater production, this version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s masterpiece The Mikado is on the clumsy side. Obviously taped on a stage (there are just two settings, a town square and a landscape) but without an audience, it lacks the spark of live performance and the versatility of film. The action is weighed down by jejune attempts at comedy. When Nanki-Poo (disguised as a musician) receives the devastating news that the woman he loves is promised to another man, he doesn’t react at all, but instead plays trombone accompaniment. And after he describes his catalog of musical offerings, the court gentlemen–for no reason except that the song’s final word is “lullaby”–drop to the ground and fall asleep. Besides not being funny, these gags are unconnected to anything in the story.

A couple of performances partly redeem things. Kate Flowers sings very well and, even better, actually creates a character. Her Yum-Yum is mischievous, blunt, sarcastic–just the kind of person who would compare herself to the sun and the moon. And as Ko-Ko, Clive Revill is a terrific combination of wily and sympathetic. Slightly hunched and wearing a jester’s costume, Revill is a nervous little schemer who’s vividly believable. William Conrad’s bland Mikado doesn’t have much impact. This is one of the less distinguished entries in the Opera World series of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. –David Olivenbaum

My 2 1/2 year traditional son is fleet wearing out the tape. It features cute animals with inspiring (but not too unsafe) adventures, befriended by adorable Mimiko. The circus notify scenes are sizable. If you’re a die-hard anime fan, it will probably disappoint, but if you’re a parent looking for a truly gentle G-rated film this is it. It also gives glimpses of typical Japanese life (school life, curry-and-rice dinners, etc.) which might be bright for older viewers.

I picked this up for my niece and nephew (ages 4 & 5), who are both devoted “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service” fans. I was aesthetic mad that they loved Miyazaki, and wanted to support them keen.

Well, they loved “Panda! Go Panda!” unprejudiced as noteworthy as the other films. I was told they watched it five times in a row. Yay for Uncle Zack!

Of all of Miyazaki’s films, this one is truly aimed at the younger crowd. There is very petite of the multi-level storytelling that you will score in his later films. The pandas (who talk, by the intention. I was gorgeous surprised by this, as Totoro does not talk.) are bundles of cuteness. The animation is decent, with lots of smart kid-friendly colors. The DVD is tall, as it offers both an English and Japanese soundtrack. (It’s a splendid film for people learning Japanese, because the vocab is shrimp.) This is very rare for imported kid’s films.

Review of Armitage: Dual-Matrix/Armitage the Third: Poly-Matrix Online

Watch Armitage: Dual-Matrix/Armitage the Third: Poly-Matrix Online Right Now!

This sequl offers little of the Blade Runner-influnced vision of a despotic future that made the original OAV and previous feature so popular. After living peacefully under assumed names on Mars, Naomi Armitage and her husband Ross Sylibus are drawn into a standard anime plot involving a sinister corporation’s efforts to create artificial humans. The curvaceous Naomi is actually a “Third,” the most formidable type of cyborg. (She’s even borne a child, which suggests just how sophisticated her circuitry is.) Naomi takes on the duplicates of her that the evil Demetrius Mardini has created, in a series of gunfights, fistfights, knife fights, and explosions. Despite the film’s promising origins, clumsy storytelling and director Katsuhito Akiyama’s tendency to stage many of the battles in dim dramatic lighting hurt its impact, as it’s difficult to follow what’s happening. Rated 16 Up: Graphic violence, violence against women, nudity, profanity. –Charles Solomon

It was a ecstatic day when I first heard Criterion was finally releasing Max Ophüls’ two sizable films, La Ronde and Earrings of Madame De. Ophüls is known for his radiant tracking shots and clarify camera movements (which influenced Stanley Kubrick) . He is also known for his black-and-white French bedroom farce, La Ronde (1950), starring Anton Walbrook, Simone Signoret, and Gérard Philipe, based on Arthur Schnitzler’s controversial 1897 play, Reigen. (Adolf Hitler considered Schnitzler’s play shameful for its depiction of the sexual morals and class ideology of its day. Schnitzler, a doctor, recognized that syphilis was not itsy-bitsy to distinct layers of Viennese society.) La Ronde (”The Roundabout”) follows a series of stories about savor affairs that destroy with one of the partners forming a fresh sexual liaison with another person. A soldier (Serge Reggiani) first meets a prostitute (Simone Signoret) and then has an affair with a young parlor maid, who then has sex with the young man of the house, who in turn has sex with a young wife, who then has sex with her husband, and so on until the film completes its circle with a Count (Gérard Philipe) having sex with the same prostitute. La Ronde is technically intelligent, the cinematography sparkles, and this is truly vast cinema. Roger Ebert calls Ophüls’ films “one of the expansive pleasures of the cinema.”

The Criterion edition features a newly restored high-definition digital transfer; audio commentary featuring film scholar Susan White, author of The Cinema of Max Ophuls; an interview with Academy Award-winning filmmaker Marcel Ophuls, discussing his father’s work; an interview with actor Daniel Gélin (Napoléon, Testament of Orpheus) ; an interview with film scholar Alan Williams; selected correspondence between Sir Laurence Olivier and Heinrich Schnitzler (the playwright’s son), illustrating the controversy surrounding the source play; unusual subtitle translation; and a unusual essay by film critic Terrence Rafferty.

G. Merritt

“La Ronde” succeeds on many levels. The screenplay, adapted from the play by Arthur Schnitzler, is witty and engaging. It has a lightness of touch and magnificent irony that is queer to the French. The performances are excellent-especially Danielle Darrieux’s portrayal of an adulterous wife. However, the proper distinction of this movie is it’s visual style. The dark and white cinematography is anything but flat. There are layers and textures in this film that are a feast for the eyes. The sumptuous dwelling decorations are beautifully ornate-almost baroque. “La Ronde” is replete with camera angles reminiscent of “Citizen Kane.” There is a unbelievable overhead shot of a young courtesan whose head is in the center of hanging light fixture-or chandelier. This aspect is that of a poet who is idealizing her. It is an absolutely gleaming moment. Ophuls has a incredible sense of movement. The long tracking shots and circular motion complement, instead of detract from, the action and emotion of the anecdote. Particularly heavenly are the carousel scenes where circles race counter to one another. One might say that the omnipresent narrator is rather intrusive, but he grows on you. He’s French, after all……
